Why is a New Facility Needed?

The current Bowie Ice Arena is located at Allen Pond Park. That facility was built in the early 1970s and needs to be replaced. There is not enough space at the park to build a new facility in the same location.

  • Target completion date is late 2020/early 2021.
  • Construction is expected to begin in spring 2019 after design phase of the project has been completed.
  • During 2018, HG Archtects will work with the project manager Hill International, Inc. to finalize the design and obtain all required permits.

At the September 18, 2017 meeting, Councilmembers approved a new ice skating facility to be built on Church Road. The facility will have two ice rinks and no basketball/volleyball courts and will cost $24 million to build.

The original proposal was to build a new indoor sports facility with five courts and two rinks at a cost of $28 million. However, when cost estimates were revised in 2017, the price tag jumped to almost $39 million. This prompted a re-evaluation of the project by City staff and City Council.  Various options were reviewed and in the end the decision was made to reduce the scope and cost of the original project.
